Champions: The Superhero RPG

Champions, currently in its 6th edition, has been around almost as long as Dungeons and Dragons. Like D&D it’s a pretty complex rules set, but most of that is frontloaded to the character creation process. Champions allows you to create whatever superhero you can think of, at a level of detail no other game really matches. Once you have your character, everything you need to know is on your character sheet and actually playing goes quite smoothly.

I have run multiple campaigns for Champions over the years and my players and I have a lot of great memories.

In one campaign, the players were a group of newbie superheroes. A profoundly dangerous supernatural predator was trying to tear open a prison in which a number of super powered criminals were incarcerated. This predator had shrugged off the strongest attacks from the newbie heroes and seemed unstoppable. One of the heroes jumped into a nearby panel truck and floored it, crashing into the bad guy at 70 MPH. This stunned it long enough for two other heroes to drag it in front of the jet exhaust from the prison’s transport vehicle, causing enough damage to defeat the creature.

All of that action was handled quickly and cleanly by the game system. I dearly love Champions and would recommend it for anyone who wants to be a superhero.
