Call of Cthulhu

Another one of the staples of the genre, CoC has been around since the earliest days of the hobby. Play this game if you want to ferret out dark secrets and forgotten lore, and face terrible monsters, the very sight of which will stretch your sanity to the breaking point! While the original CoC was set in the 1920s to the 1930s, stories can be set in almost any time period.

GM (me): Your jury rigged repairs seem to have worked! The engine coughs again, but then catches and settles down into a steady roar.

J (playing investigator Peterson): Yes! Everybody on board the Getting the Hell Out of Dodge express!

(the other investigators pile into the delivery van)

GM: As you back up to get your nose pointed towards the main road, you can see dark shapes running towards you. It’s hard to see in the moonlight, but they don’t look like humans. They are too hunched over, and move with a sort of galloping, low to the ground pace that really eats up the distance.

J: I floor it! (rolls dice against his Driving skill)

GM: Success! The van begins rolling forward, picking up speed. It looks like you’ll be able to get clear before all those shadowy figures catch up with you. At least, that’s what you think before something lands on top of the van with a loud thud! Moments later, a grotesque face leans over the windshield from the roof and arms that are too long to be human start bashing at the glass! Everyone in the cab roll against your Sanity!

(The driver made his roll and was able to keep the van moving. Another player sitting next to him was less fortunate, and she ended up panic firing her gun through the windshield, getting rid of the unwanted passenger along with all of her ammunition.)
